The Journey of African Americans Through Reconstruction
The end of the Civil War brought a longing for peace in the United States. President Abraham Lincoln spoke of this "just and lasting peace" before his assassination and the task fell to President Andrew Johnson. Reconstruction was the period of time after the Civil War in which Southern states were rebuilt and brought back into the Union. There were opposing views on how to rebuild the Southern states and the status of African Americans in this new Union. This website has been created to represent the journey of the nation and African Americans through the Reconstruction Era. African Americans' lives and families changed tremendously from slavery to Reconstruction.
