African Americans made up the South's largest group of voters, mostly joining the Republican party, the party of President Lincoln and emancipation. White Southerners who had not supported secession were the next biggest group, also supporting the Republican Party. They were poor farmers that saw the Democratic Party as the party of wealthy planters and secession. The last group were Northerners who had moved south after the war.
